Ano Zensei (1153–1203), younger brother of Minamoto no Yoritomo, was both a high-ranking esoteric Buddhist monk — serving as head priest of Izusan Gongen — and a formidable military figure. His dual authority, documented in the Azuma Kagami, epitomizes the fusion of religion and political power in medieval Japan.
Toki Watanabe researches the shogunal rites spanning Izusan, Hakone, and Mishima, and the spiritual foundations that underpinned medieval power.
She is the first in Japan to produce a complete transcription and modern translation of Busshin Ittai Kanjōshō, fus. Issho Mishima Sankei (Enryakuji Sanmon manuscript), sharing this work through academic publication and study sessions.

Collecting, transcribing, and bringing to scholarly publication a wide range of historical secret texts from various fields — long kept in temple and library archives and transmitted solely through oral tradition. Covering documents spanning Buddhism, Shinto, warrior culture, and mountain asceticism, the research illuminates the nature of secret transmission and its structural inheritance in medieval Japan through primary sources. The complete transcription and modern translation of Busshin Ittai Kanjōshō, fus. Issho Mishima Sankei (Enryaku-ji, Sanmon archive) is one such example.
神道集を読む → The Shintōshū should be read not as an official ranking decreed by the state or institution, but as a record of the places where people truly entrusted their lives. In a world where death was never far away, people prayed with desperate need — to recover, to heal, to survive. "I prayed here, and I was truly saved." It was this accumulation of lived experience that gave rise to a natural hierarchy of sacred sites. A 14th-century compendium. Annotated source texts, ongoing. Read the Shintōshū →
